Teachers are part of a community that creates an intensive four-week immersion program for middle and high school students each summer. Located on several college campuses, Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy™ offers students the opportunity to study Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, or Spanish with skilled language educators. Teachers teach the target language, cultures, and literature via the Middlebury Immersion Methodology. Classes at the Academy are designed to be task-based, interactive, learner-centered, and experiential for students. All courses and daily events are conducted in the target language. A typical teaching load consists of 3 hours of daily language classes. Teachers are also responsible for conducting an elective class, a project-based language class. Additional duties include proctoring study hall and participating in evening activities and weekend programming.
At the Academy, students of five languages learn via a specially designed Summer Residential Academy Immersion Curriculum. All instructional staff are required to participate in pre-season curriculum training to understand the educational mission and vision and to master and implement the immersion curriculum by adopting and practicing the Middlebury Immersion Methodology. All staff and students adopt the Middlebury Language Pledge©, modified as needed for the student age group and language level so that a full immersion environment is created.
Plan and Prepare Responsibilities:
- Participate in pre-season curriculum training lead by the Language Director.
- Plan daily classes following the guidelines stipulated in the Summer Residential Academy Immersion Curriculum by working with the Language Director and fellow peers. Sometimes, team teaching is required.
- Plan Cultural Exploration classes that address the Immersion Curriculum guidelines, and are appealing and age appropriate for the students.
Instruct and Support Student Engagement in Learning Responsibilities:
- Implement the Immersion Curriculum in daily language classes.
- Teach effective, engaging elective classes.
- Create a positive and safe community for learning.
- Mastery of teaching in target language—create level appropriate lesson plan with clear objectives and implement it via a student-centered way.
- Include authentic materials in teaching and design effective authentic materials in teaching and design effective authentic material activities for learning.
- Include form-based inductive grammar learning activities in the classroom.
Reflect and Adjust Responsibilities:
- Allow class observations and participate in coaching sessions conducted by Language Director.
- Maintain an open-minded and positive attitude towards Language Director’s hands-on coaching and make instructional adjustments as needed to ensure classes are delivered via the Middlebury Immersion Methodology.
- Participate in academy programming.
- Work to continually maintain a high-quality summer Academy through interaction, participation and visibility throughout the program.
- Support the Language Pledge.
- Communicate professionally and effectively to parents, students and other staff.
- Provide meaningful feedback to students.
- Work with other faculty, staff, and site administrators to create a successful Academy.
- Complete evaluations, reports and other documentation in a timely manner.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge and utilization of the Academy policies and procedures to create a safe, supportive, rewarding environment for students and staff.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION:
This is a residential position. All employees will be provided room and board. They will have two full days off during the 4-week session. All employees pay for their travel to and from program locations. Transportation from local airport and train station is provided at both the beginning and the end of the program by MIL. Housing is not provided for family members.
Preseason work and training is required for this position.
- Current language educators
- Some K-16 teaching experience is required
- World Language teaching experience at the secondary level strongly preferred
- Mastery of the target language and culture
- Formal training in second language acquisition, and/or world language pedagogy strongly preferred
- Ability to work as a team and maintain open-minded and positive attitude
- Ability to handle difficult moments/situations with patience and professionalism at all times
- Demonstrated interest in professional development.
